- REGISTERING SITE-TO-SITE AND THE 7.0 PLUS UTILITIES
- ==================================================
- Site-to-Site is not free. Contact the author for site licensing information.
- Please send a few dollars. Or you can consider the following.
-
- 7.0 PLUS Utilities is a package of all (more than 25) System 7.0 utilities
- I have written. You can get the disk with all of them NOW (not wait until
- I decide to upload the next program) by sending $29.95 to me. This will
- register you for all the software, will get you a disk of the software, and
- an update to the PLUS Utilities when it rolls around. It’s a pretty good
- deal. You should register your software, anyway, so why not do it
- like this? And it’s a lot cheaper this way.
-
- See the documentation which should accompany this file for more information
- on the 7.0 PLUS Utilities. A registration form should also accompany this file.
- Please use it to register the software.
-
- USING SITE-TO-SITE
- ==================
- • If you use Site-to-Site, please please please send me a note. My addresses
- (post and e-mail) are given below in “About the Author”. Also, read the
- information in the above section on registration.
-
- What Does Site-to-Site Do?
- -------------------
- • Site-to-Site, a drag-and-drop utility (Drop Rob-Box), moves all selected
- items (disks, folders, files) into a newly created or existing directory. If
- items are moved from one disk to another, the items can be optionally deleted
- from the source disk. Integrity of directory contents (file locations, labels,
- etc.) is maintained.
-
- Using Site-to-Site
- -----------------
- • To move a selection to a new directory, drag items over the Site-to-Site
- icon until the Site-to-Site icon highlights, and release the mouse button.
- Any combination of files, folders, and disks can be moved to new directories.
-
- • Double-click on Site-to-Site to see the about box information.
-
- • To cancel processing, just type a command-period. Files already processed
- will remain moved.
-
- • Click the “Delete Originals” button to place an X inside to delete files if they
- are copied from disk to disk. (Normally, they remain on the source disk.)
- Click again to remove the X.
-
- • Click the “Move into Existing Directory” button to move the selected items
- into the directory currently being viewed (which has the name right below
- the button in the pop-up menu).
-
- • Click the “Save” button to create a new folder for the selected items with
- the name given in the edit field below the file list.
-
- • If you have chosen to delete original items (through the button in the
- save window), and an error occurs or you abort manually (command-.),
- no files will be deleted.
-
- • Hold down the shift key while Site-to-Site is launching to automatically
- delete original copies of items moved from disk to disk. (This can also be
- set manually in the save dialog.)
-
- • Hold down the option key while Site-to-Site is launching to automatically
- create a new “untitled folder” containing the selected items.
-
- • You can hold down option and shift at the same time for the desired effects.
-
- • Turn on balloon help and point the cursor at the Site-to-Site icon to see
- information on using Site-to-Site without consulting this document.
-
- A Step-by-Step Example
- ----------------------
- • Five items are on the desktop:
- - HD (a hard disk, of course)
- - Floppy (a floppy disk)
- - HD’s File
- - HD’s Folder
- - Floppy’s File
-
- • Floppy, HD’s File, HD’s Folder, and Floppy’s file are all selected (that’s
- everything except HD) and are dragged over the Site-to-Site icon until
- the Site-to-Site icon highlights. The mouse button is then released and
- Site-to-Site Launches.
-
- • The user (I’ll refer to the user as “Pat”, who could be male or female.)
- doesn’t feel comfortable doing anything automatically, so s/he doesn't
- hold down any modifiers.
-
- • Site-to-Site finishes launching and Pat sees the standard save file
- dialog with a couple new buttons: the Delete Originals button, and the
- Move into Existing Directory button. Pat decides to create a new folder,
- so “Blah” is entered into the edit field. Pat hates cleaning up
- manually, so s/he hits checks the Delete Originals button hits return
- (the same as clicking on Save). As Pat hits return, s/he notes that
- while fooling around with the save dialog, s/he has saved the new
- directory onto the folder “Pat’s Stuff” on HD.
-
- • Now Site-to-Site goes to work. Disks grind for a while, and the program
- finally quits back to the Finder.
-
- • Pat checks to see what has happened. There are four items inside a new
- folder, “Blah”, created inside the folder “Pat’s Stuff” on HD: two folders
- (Floppy and HD’s Folder), and two files (HD’s file and Floppy’s File).
- When checking out the Floppy, Pat notices that there's no files on the
- desktop. Floppy’s file has been deleted (which was what Pat wanted).
- In fact, the entire contents of Floppy has been deleted, since Floppy was
- dragged in and Delete Originals was turned on. This was exactly what
- Pat wanted.
-
- ASIDE: Site-to-Site works just like the finder in that if you don't delete
- originals, copies remain on the other disk. Of course, if you are
- moving items around on the same disk, no copies are present to
- to delete, since items are just changing directories, not being
- duplicated.
-
- Site-to-Site and Aliases
- -----------------------
- • Since the Finder resolves all aliases when you drop them into a Drop Box,
- Site-to-Site can only think that you dropped the target (not the alias) in to be
- counted. If an alias is within a directory you have dropped in, the actual
- size of the alias is calculated (not the size of the target or parent file).
-
- IMPORTANT!!!!
- •••••••••••
- • If you turn on the “delete originals” option and drop in an alias to some item,
- the target (NOT THE ALIAS) will be copied and deleted.
-
- USING DROP BOXES
- =================
- Drop Boxes are applications (drag-and-drop utilities) which can take advantage
- of System 7.0’s Apple Events. To use them, just drag a file over the application
- icon just as you would drag a file over a folder to move it into that directory.
- The Drop Box is then opened and processing is done. The program then quits.
- You can also throw in whole directories and disks. You don’t have to throw in
- just one, either. Select a whole bunch of files, directories, or disks, or any
- combination of the three, and dump them in. The Drop Box will scan for
- files of the required type and modify them accordingly. All files in all
- directories within those dropped in will be modified. Any aliases dropped
- directly into a Drop Box (not inside a directory) are resolved by the Finder
- and thus their target (parent) is modified.
